Bear’s Way Trail

Project type

Trail Build

Date

2024

Location

Lee, MA

In early 2024 we were contacted by a private land owner interested in building a loop trail on their property. We began by hiking the property, tracking our footsteps, and taking notes. AFter generating a proposed loop, we refined it with the owners and submitted an application package to the Lee Conservation Commission. A few weeks later we had a good meeting, and had a negative ‘Request for Determination of Applicability’ - which is good in this case, as it indicated a more extensive MassDEP ‘Notice of Intent’ (NOI) process could be avoided. We presented maps, photos of construction details, and outlined our proposed methods of work in the 4 stream crossing areas we would be working with.

Unique to the project were a couple of bridges along the proposed & approved route. These were to be a little more involved, so we got to work designing a long span structure (32’-0”) and a modest span stair-step bridge. We had to get across 16’ but also elevate about 4’-0” vertically at the same time. See photos for some of the details & notes.

It came out great - including the custom designed map & signage we included. We look forward to expanding this gem of a trail when the owner’s are ready.
